As we get ready to celebrate our City’s 150th anniversary, it’s exciting to reflect on the wonderful gifts that our City’s founder, General William Jackson Palmer, bestowed on us. This includes more than 2,000 acres of incredible parkland – which, 148 years later, still includes some of the most sweeping, majestic views in the world.  Examples of parkland gifts from Palmer include: Alamo, Acacia, Antlers, Monument Valley and Palmer Park.

Another of Palmer's amazing legacies to our community is our tree-lined city.  When he founded our city in 1871, it was a nearly treeless, arid plain. Palmer changed that by planting thousands of trees in our city. To celebrate our 150th anniversary in 2021 and carry on Palmer’s vision of a tree-lined city, we are challenging the community to help plant 18,071 new trees over the next two years.

Marisa S White is best known for seamlessly stitching multiple photographs together, weaving her own personal narrative through surrealistic and fantastical imagery. Having grown up in Houston, Texas with The Menil Collection and the MFAH in her backyard, Marisa was heavily influenced by the Surrealists. She incorporates these dream-like scenes to express an idea or an emotion perhaps not so easily conveyed through traditional landscapes and realistic settings. However, her images speak to concepts not so foreign or mysterious, but to touch upon our own questions of life, love, fear, and the unknown.

Initially a mixed media collage artist, she received her BFA at the University of North Texas. Through her studies, she fell in love with the camera and further developed the use of photography in her work after a summer in Missoula, Montana at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography.
Marisa's work has received numerous accolades for her art, has exhibited across the US and in Europe and is collected internationally. Her work was recently featured at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California.

She currently resides in Colorado with her husband of 10+ years, whom she fondly refers to as Captain Awesome, and their two fur babies.

Shannon Mello:

"I’ve been creating art my whole life.  I’ve also always been a lover of nature and the great outdoors since I can remember.  The artwork I create, whether it is the materials or the subject matter itself, will almost always have a connection to nature.  Encaustic is made from beeswax and tree resin, which somehow naturally seems to have the most incredible soothing effect.  Watercolors create ethereal lands, usually complemented by the use of gold or copper leafing.  My cold wax & oil paintings usually depict an abstracted landscape with subtle earth tones, contrasted by small bits of breaking light.  I have taken many different paths with artwork but the sure constant is that inspiration is always available if you step outside.

I have two amazing children and a husband who also share my love of the outdoors.  We emphasize the arts in our family and inspire our children to take risks and create with whatever is available, from pine cones to canvas.  During the day I am a homeschooling teacher.  By night, after the kids are sleeping, I hop myself up on coffee and create.

I hope this artwork inspires you to take risks and find your own means of creation.  Maybe it’s visually, mentally, spiritually, or physically.  Maybe it’s with pine cones.  Whatever you do, do it with love."

The Opening Reception will feature music by Dubficious.

Artist Statement:

"Painting landscapes that I live in out of dirt from places I go.

All of my pigments are real dirt that I have gathered and processed by hand. Each time I take a road trip, a trowel and bags are packed in the car so I can stop along the way. Road-cuts and hillsides across the Southwest yield dirt of myriad hues, from iron-rich reds to soft pinks, ochres, and even green. Coal collected from the Four Corners area provides a deep, beautiful black. Using these materials, I create images of the landscapes that I live in and interact with.

Creating connection with the earth – for me, literally, by getting my hands into it with each piece I make."

Audrey Gray lives and creates in Colorado Springs, where she is close to the mountains and the sky.

Audrey Gray grew up in the Denver metro area, where she spent a good deal of her free time making potions out of dirt and plants. She moved to Texas for college and graduated from Southwestern University in 2001 with a degree in Studio Art. In 2007, she moved to the Pikes Peak region and began creating and showing locally.

She currently lives in Colorado Springs with her son Solomon. They make rock and dirt hunting expeditions part of their weekend routine. Audrey serves on the boards of the Pikes Peak Arts Council, the Manitou Springs Arts Council, and the Manitou Springs Creative District, where she works to support local artists.

The Opening Reception will feature music by Dubficious.

This contemporary take on the classic tale features Rodgers & Hammerstein’s most beloved songs, including “In My Own Little Corner,” “Impossible/It’s Possible” and “Ten Minutes Ago.” With great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, this romantic fairy tale will warm your heart.

With a thirty-year history, this spectacular holiday event continues to be a Colorado classic. Set in the grandeur of The Great Hall of The Castle, our 16th century-style banquet and show is sure to inspire and prepare your heart for this Christmas season.

This is a full evening, with a 4-course dinner and performance. You’ll enjoy music, dancing and plenty of humor with our talented troupe of performers. The banquet typically lasts over 3 hours. To that end, we highly discourage bringing young children. Seating is tight and we seat parties across from one another, in order to view the entire scope of the performance.

Activity takes place all over the Great Hall, including the balcony. Guests with overnight reservations receive highest priority in seat assignments, and other guests are seated in order that the reservations are received. You will receive tickets with seat assignments upon your arrival in the Castle foyer the night of the performance.

Add an optional overnight stay in the Castle for an unforgettable holiday experience. Pricing is per person and before tax. If selecting an overnight package, first choose your hotel room and then your Madrigal Banquet tickets. If you are staying more than one night, please call our reservations office at 719-265-7050 for assistance.

[more+]

Come enjoy the sights and sounds of the holiday season with us on our guided holiday walking beer tour through the beautiful, quaint mountain town of Manitou Springs, Colorado!

Along the way we’ll sample some of the finest Colorado craft beers, share a little bit of local history, and talk about the craft beer phenomenon!

This version of our “Original 1872” walking beer tour features some really unique Winter Beers. Winter Beers are typically a little stronger, richer and full bodied and our holiday tour promises some great Santa inspired beers to help keep you warm on our walking tour of Manitou Springs. (Featured beers are subject to change without notice.)

And we promise, your guide will not be singing…ok, he might sing a little, or a lot if he’s in the mood. But we can’t promise how good it will be.

We will begin our tour with a pint of craft beer at the American Legion Post and end our tour with another pint at the American Legion!
