Colorado Springs Is Getting a Pro Football Team

Colorado Springs is getting a pro football team. The UFL Colorado name-to-be-determined will be playing at Weidner Field in downtown Colorado Springs when the United Football League season kicks off next spring. The league announced today that Colorado will be part of the spring football league’s addition of four new markets over the next two seasons. As for the team name, colors, logos and brand identity for the Colorado Springs team, all will be revealed Oct. 25 at a public celebration at Weidner Field.

“It came down to three things. It came down to the right city, the right venue and a passionate fan base,” says UFL Co-Owner Mike Repole. “[Colorado Springs] is the right market for us. It’s exciting to bring [pro football there]. We met with the owners of the Switchback FC team. We went to Weidner Field. What a beautiful new stadium, beautiful mountains in the background. It was a no-brainer for us.”

“Bringing professional football to Colorado Springs is a vote of confidence in our city and in what we have built downtown,” says Mayor Yemi Mobolade. “A UFL team will put Colorado Springs in front of a national audience, bring fans to Weidner Field and give Southern Colorado a professional football team to call its own. We are proud to welcome the UFL to the foot of Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain, and we look forward to seeing our community make this team its own.”

What Is the UFL?

The United Football League bills itself as the premiere pro spring football league. It was created in 2024 from the merger of the XFL and the USFL. As in the NFL and NCAA, teams play 11 versus 11, but the UFL has some specialized rules that promote exciting, fast-paced play. Those include a 4-point field goal of 60 yards or more, no punting inside the 50-yard-line except in the final 2 minutes of the game, and a 3-point conversion from the 8 yard line. Games typically last less than two hours. 

The UFL serves as a pathway for players to prove themselves and move up to the highest level NFL. According to the UFL, 118 former UFL players attended NFL Training Camps following last season, ultimately leading to 46 UFL players on current NFL active rosters or practice squads.

“Many of the players you’re going to see were first-round draft picks that played in the NFL for three years and now play in this league. You’re going to see sixth-round picks that just missed and were the last cut on the [NFL] playing squad,” Repole says, noting that his friend Tom Brady was a sixth round draft pick coming out of college. “So the talent pool is amazing. We call ourselves football entertainment, but the quality of football on the field is amazing.”

Off the field, the UFL saw growth in 2026 as it undertook an ambitious plan to reimagine spring football under the new leadership of Repole. The billionaire businessman and sports investor co-founded and sold the companies behind Vitaminwater and BodyArmor SuperDrink. He also led Pirate’s Booty snacks to large growth and is the majority owner of No Bull footwear and apparel brand with Tom Brady as a partner. He has also built Repole Stable into a leading racehorse operation. Repole says he has been a lifelong Denver Broncos fans since the Orange Crush days of the ’70s and ’80s and the career of John Elway. It helped that the New York Giants and Jets were not successful teams during Repole’s formative years in Queens, New York.

Repole says all 2027 UFL games, including Colorado Springs’, will be televised by ESPN, ABC or Fox Sports. The league’s momentum in 2026 included numerous games eclipsing 1 million viewers, and increases in overall ticket sales, culminating with a sold-out United Bowl as the Louisville Kings captured the championship in their inaugural season.

“2026 was an incredible year for the UFL, and seeing the response from our fans, players and partners has made what comes next even more exciting,” Repole said. “There is a real energy around this league right now, and we’re thrilled to bring that energy to four new markets. We said in July that our next step was finding the right markets, venues and fan bases where we can work with local leaders to build the strongest franchises for today and for the future, and we believe Colorado, Rhode Island, Oklahoma and Utah represent those qualities. We’re thankful to the local leaders and partners who believed in this vision and have helped us get here. We can’t wait to see these markets come to life and the best part is that this is just the beginning.”

Colorado and Utah will join the league for the 2027 season. Utah and Oklahoma will join the league in 2028, bringing the UFL to 10 teams. Rhode Island will play at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, Utah at America First Field in Sandy, and Oklahoma at the new MAPS 4 Multipurpose Stadium in Oklahoma City.

The UFL’s recent expansions have been to markets with soccer-specific stadiums, and Repole emphasizes the intimate size as a close-to-the-action benefit of the experience. He says the league looked seriously at eight to 10 cities before selecting the current four markets for expansion.

Pro Football in Colorado Springs 2028

Weidner Field is already home to the Switchbacks FC USL Championship professional soccer club as well as concerts and other large events, but the addition of UFL football will activate the stadium regularly through the spring. At 6,035 feet above sea level, Weidner Field sits more than 750 feet higher than Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, giving Colorado a distinctive high-altitude home for professional football.

Repole says he has spoken with Weidner Apartments Homes about possibly expanding the stadium’s capacity in the future, and he says the UFL is committed to building strong, long-term community in Colorado Springs. 

“We want to be part of that growth as Colorado grows as a state and as Colorado Springs grows as a city and really support it,” he says. “If the Colorado Springs team isn’t here in 25 years, I’m going to owe you an apology; I promise you that.”

He also emphasizes strong community involvement and an affordable experience for fans. 

“Right now we have our mascots going to every single high school game in every market we’re at,” he says. “We’re part of the community. We want this to be affordable, accessible, attainable.”

A family of four should be able to attend a Colorado Springs UFL game for $100, Repole says, maybe $160 or $170 for seats in the first few rows. 

Hiring a coaching staff is a top priority, Repole says, and a UFL draft will take place by November. The Colorado team name, colors, logo and brand identity will be unveiled during a public event at Weidner Field on Oct. 25 with season ticket deposits available for fans at the event. Repole says the team colors will  not be blue and orange or the same as any of Colorado’s major colleges. 

The Colorado Springs UFL team will play its inaugural home game on Sunday, April 11, at 5 p.m. MT. The game will be televised on ABC.
