Consider this your excuse to indulge in the heart of downtown. Fine art, drinks, dining—even rock climbing—are within a few blocks of your stay at the Mining Exchange, a Wyndam Grand Hotel. Valet your vehicle; you won’t need it.
Get the relaxation going right from the start with a 50-minute couple’s massage in the cozy MX Spa. Tucked in the lower level of the hotel, a carpeted tunnel leads to MX Spa, which offers a steam room and dry saunas in both locker rooms, lux amenities—those C.O. Bigelow bath products extend into each room—and a lovely spa staff. Similar to the rest of the hotel, the decor tastefully incorporates exposed original brick and gleaming new granite.
The M.E. was originally built between 1900 and 1902, with a solid granite exterior down to the bedrock. Fitting, given that it was one of the highest-volume stock exchanges in the world in its time. The grand and airy lobby still references those dizzying days with an antique piano, original safe, spectacular Italian marble fireplace and fine art commissioned by local artist Phil Lear. Sipping bubbly at the lobby bar transports you back to that gilded age when anything seemed possible as long as you were in Colorado Springs.
There’s marble in the foyer of our suite as well, along with more fine art, a plush sofa, a broad desk and a corner view. The bathroom invites hanging out much like the spa, with a spacious tub, walk-in shower with two separate heads and a wide, well-appointed vanity.
Turn Up the Romance
The Mining Exchange is offering several different romantic specials during February, from the Date Night Package to the Makin’ Whoopee Package—named for the decadent whoopee pie-making kit that’s included, of course.
Winter rates start at approximately $165

It’s all enough to make you want to stay in and enjoy the view of glowing city lights on the street below. We weigh our options. There’s anything and everything here in the middle of the city, no matter your mood. Tejon Street has a full array of nightclubs—see what’s on the lineup at the intimate Mezzanine, or catch a live show at the M.E.’s Gold Room. Take in a movie at the art-house Kimball’s Peak Three Theater, which shares a block with the hotel. Or get active at CityRock, a former movie theater revamped into a huge indoor climbing facility.
Dining options abound: Go Cajun at the M.E.’s flagship restaurant Springs Orleans, or upscale with oysters, steaks and a perfectly crafted Aviation at The Famous, or quirky gourmet with lavender chocolate mousse and savory crepes at the entirely gluten-free Coquette’s.
As for us, we’re under the comfortable spell of the Mining Exchange. We reach for the phone and dial room service.
