How to Celebrate Galentine’s Day in the Springs

It’s time to grab your girls and celebrate female friendship on Feb. 13 — because your bestie deserves more than just a like. Here are Galentine’s Day tips and events happening all over Colorado Springs.

Leslie Knope is our queen. And once a year, we grab our besties and pay tribute as we celebrate Galentine’s Day on Feb. 13. If you’re new to Galentine’s, it’s the holiday created by Knope, Amy Poehler’s Parks and Recreation character, during which she celebrates the power of female friendship on the day before Valentine’s Day. We would like to add that: 1. You don’t have to be single — or a woman — to celebrate. 2. While Galentine’s Day is observed on Feb. 13, you do not — and should not — only celebrate your platonic loves one day a year.

With that in mind, we offer you a carefully curated list of Galentine’s Day-specific activities in Colorado Springs, and some ideas to share with your BFFs all year round.

1. Get Perfectly Polished

Grab your girls for some side-by-side spa-ing and sipping. Beauty Bar combines two of the best bestie activities: nails and cocktails. Whether you want a classic French manicure, a Barbie pink pedi or something flashy with art, stones or glitter, the professionals at Beauty Bar can deliver. We lean toward pedicures to keep your hands free to sip on seasonal cocktails or mocktails. Reservations are definitely recommended, whether you choose the downtown or Powers location.

Can’t get an appointment at Beauty Bar? The Springs is full of hole-in-the-wall nail salons and day spas capable of side-by-side nail services for a girl date. Pick one close to you and build in time for a post pedicure splurge at the neighborhood pub.

2. Take a Shopping Trip

Most of the time, you will find us shopping local. Be it boutiques, gift shops or thrift stores, we try to spend our money locally. However, sometimes you just need the thrill of potentially finding a life-size disco ball horse. Or a hot dog stool. Or a Ouija cheese board. Because when you walk into HomeGoods in First and Main Town Center on Powers, you’re entering a fever dream of decoration possibilities. There’s even an entire TikTok trend dedicated to highlighting the absurd items found at HomeGoods. Do you need a set of purple martini glasses and a dog bed that looks like a miniature couch? We do not judge.

And not judging pairs best with a drink. We advocate safety before all else, but we also recommend grabbing a drink before hitting up HomeGoods. Just across a pair of parking lots from the mecca of oddball home decor you can find Wobbly Olive — or make a reservation for the theme-based Allusion Speakeasy inside the Olive. Just across Tutt Boulevard you’ll find Peaks N Pines’ original brewery’s. Because if you aren’t going to shop local, you can at least drink local.

3. Sing Your Heart Out

Depending on the study, between 57% and 67% of songs are about love. Don’t worry if that grosses you out. There are lots of places you can go this Galentine’s Day to croon away at karaoke with your BFFs about girl power, how to get back at an ex, or just to get your American Idol on. There’s nothing like a Girls Night Out in your favorite jeans and that top you just had to have but haven’t figured out where to wear — now it will fill you with rock-star confidence.

Got stage fright? That’s what duets and group songs are for! Plus, you probably don’t know most of the people in the crowd, nor will you ever see them again, so let loose. Here’s a short list of thematic song recommendations but basically follow Prince’s advice: “Let’s go crazy! Let’s get nuts!”

4. Binge Chick Flicks with a Cocktail

Sometimes the world is just too peopley, and nothing sounds better than a night on the couch under comfy blankets with a friend watching movies that celebrate female power. You could get creative and dig up a cocktail recipe that might fit the theme of your movie, or you could take advantage of our favorite COVID-19 holdover: the to-go cocktail. While not as prevalent as during the lockdown days, such places as Illegal Pete’s and Fuzzy’s and Torchy’s multiple Springs locations offer takeout drinks (hope you’re in the mood for a margarita). Or if you’re looking for something more unique, you can grab a drink to go from PigLatin Cocina.

Your authors are of a certain generation (X), so movies like Mean Girls, Heathers, Clueless and Legally Blonde are the chick-flick comfort food that feeds our souls. But there is no shortage of quality friendship films: A League of Their Own, Girls Trip, Pitch Perfect, Barbie.… It’s your movie night; watch what makes your heart happy. Though we do make a strong suggestion to cue up Parks and Recreation, Season 2, Episode 16.
