As we get ready to celebrate our City’s 150th anniversary, it’s exciting to reflect on the wonderful gifts that our City’s founder, General William Jackson Palmer, bestowed on us. This includes more than 2,000 acres of incredible parkland – which, 148 years later, still includes some of the most sweeping, majestic views in the world.  Examples of parkland gifts from Palmer include: Alamo, Acacia, Antlers, Monument Valley and Palmer Park.

Another of Palmer's amazing legacies to our community is our tree-lined city.  When he founded our city in 1871, it was a nearly treeless, arid plain. Palmer changed that by planting thousands of trees in our city. To celebrate our 150th anniversary in 2021 and carry on Palmer’s vision of a tree-lined city, we are challenging the community to help plant 18,071 new trees over the next two years.

Colorado photographer Mike Pach of 3 Peaks Photography is helping the City of Colorado Springs celebrate COS150 with his own “then and now” photography project. Mike is replicating photos from the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, the Pikes Peak Library District and other archives in his own way while showcasing people who are doing amazing things in our community.

Mike’s project will culminate in an exhibit that will feature 50 pairs of photographs and will open on July 8, 2021 at Library 21c. The photos will be on display at this location for 2 months and then travel to various library branches and other venues for the next 6-12 months.

The project is designed to celebrate the Colorado Springs sesquicentennial and educate the public about the history of the area. It has the backing of the mayor’s office and was recognized by Colorado Springs City Council on January 28, 2020 through an official proclamation.

Denim Day is an international celebration where millions of people wear jeans with the purpose to support survivors of sexual assault and educate themselves and others about all forms of sexual violence. For the past 22 years people across the world have joined together in solidarity to support survivors by renewing our commitment to exposing harmful behaviors and attitudes surrounding sexual violence.

Denim Day was celebrated across the world on April 28 in 2021. Because of COVID restrictions and fear surrounding holding an event we wanted to wait to plan our event until we could have it safely. We chose July 29 to celebrate in the outdoors and share lunch while our volunteers show the many ways to wear denim knowing they are safe to do so.

The mission for Finding Our Voices is to empower survivors of sexual assault to thrive by offering creative activities and healing events while advocating in our community.

All sponsorship and ticketed attendees will have seating to enjoy a denim show while while facts about sexual assault will be presented by models wearing denim and holding information signs.

Enjoy a one of a kind family fun western themed event with entertainment, a parade, food, kids games, gold panning, vendors, horses, bright blue skies, a beautiful lake and so much more!

Bronc Day is one of the longest historical events running in Southern Colorado. It began in 1939 to welcome cowhands, tourists and families who were coming to the Ute Pass area to rodeo, vacation or work the summer trades. It led to some fun times and Bronc Day became an annual day that people set aside to attend as part of their summer experience and family memories!

Over the years, it has expanded with kids games, gold panning. lots of vendors selling their wares and fabulous food from our local merchants. All this along with live entertainment: singing, Victorian dance lessons, western costumes, rubber ducky races on the creek and much more. It truly is the friendliest day and the most fun event for your family to enjoy!

There is no admission fee. So put July 31st on your calendar for a drive to the beautiful town of Green Mountain Falls and the 83rd Annual Bronc Day Festivities.

If you’ve been wondering what you can do to make a difference these days, start here! Awaken Creative’s Coffee Shop Pop-Ups are designed to bring the community together for fun & meaningful shared experiences, presented by our very own GhostLight Ensemble, a group of highly creative people who are passionate and concerned about our world today.

From July through November, we’ll present 4 Coffee Shop Pop-Ups, each with all new material, filled with comedy, stories, music, friendly competition, poetry, and more. We will explore our themes in a different way, with the goal of easing our community towards a commitment to making change through original pieces, including "The Last ShowStopper”, a live sitcom that takes place in—you guessed it—a nostalgic video rental store, as well as “Micro—>Macro”, our original live game show (with prizes from local businesses)!

Also, sprinkled throughout each Pop-Up will be more creative explorations of our theme: “barriers and gateways to unity and reconciliation.” Think of it like SNL with a meaningful twist!

KIDS? While there will be nothing “inappropriate” for kiddos at our Pop-Ups, these events are created primarily for adults (+ teens) in our community to tackle tough issues in a lighthearted and meaningful way.

Best-selling and award-winning author Pam Houston has been named the 2021 recipient of the Frank Waters Award by the Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District. Houston, a Colorado resident, will receive the award and be the keynote speaker at the Frank Waters/Golden Quill award event. This literary awards ceremony is an annual signature event of the Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District. The Sunday soiree from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 8, at the Colorado Springs Marriott, 5590 Tech Center Drive.

Pam Houston is the author of a memoir, “Deep Creek: Finding Hope in The High Country”; two novels, “Contents May Have Shifted” and “Sight Hound”; two collections of short stories, “Cowboys Are My Weakness” and “Waltzing the Cat”; and a collection of essays, “A Little More About Me.”

Houston worked as a rafting guide, a sheep-hunting guide in Alaska, and once rode a sailboat through a hurricane, but now rides horses and owns a ranch near Creede. Once she found her literary voice, she settled for good in the Colorado high country.

She is the winner of a Western States Book Award, the WILLA Award for contemporary fiction, the Evil Companions Literary Award and several teaching awards.

The 2020 Golden Quill award also will be given at the event. The annual prize, given to a local publication, will recognize “Colorado Springs: A Changing Landscape.” This soft-bound coffee-table book includes historical photos of the city along with current photos of the same locations.

The book was the brainchild of Don Kallaus, owner of Rhyolite Press, who collaborated with photographer and teacher Angela Crews and a group of photography students at Pikes Peak Community College. About 150 pages of color photos contrast with the black-and-white images taken by Glenn Wesley Murray from the 1930's to 1960's.

The event will be a cocktail party-style gathering in The Pavilion, a large tent on the hotel grounds, with heavy hors d’oeuvres and drinks.

Books will be for sale at the event and authors will be on hand to autograph them. Proceeds from the event benefit the Friends organization.
