Phantom Canyon Introduces New Female Head Brewer

Kat Hess takes over brewing operations at the Springs’ oldest brewery. The move marks a strong contrast to industry trends.

Phantom Canyon is going against the grain — or maybe the mash? — with the hiring of its new head brewer Kat Hess. Colorado Springs’ oldest brewery recently made the announcement that Hess will lead its brewing operations “into an exciting new era of brewing innovation.”

“I am honored to join the team at Phantom Canyon Brewing Company,” Hess said in a press release. “Phantom Canyon has a rich history and a commitment to quality that is truly inspiring. I look forward to working with our talented team to craft exceptional beers that celebrate the spirit of Colorado Springs.”

The hire marks a notable contrast to industry trends. Only 11% of U.S. brewers were women in 2021, according to a study by Zippia. Nothing against the beard bros who have helped craft our favorite beers locally and beyond, but those kind of numbers don’t indicate the most inclusive of industries. Prior to Hess’ hiring, Jess Fiero of Atrevida Beer has been the only female head brewer (and owner) in the Springs.

Hess brings a great deal of experience to her role as Head Brewer at Phantom Canyon. Locally, she has overseen brewing operations at Pikes Peak Brewing Company and worked at Red Leg Brewing. In 2023, Hess received her World Brewing Academy diploma from the esteemed Siebel Institute of Technology-Doemens Academy, providing recognition as a leader in the craft brewing industry. She brings a passion for brewing and a commitment to guest experiences to her new role, Phantom says. And she lists her favorite beer styles as French saisons and Munich helles.

“We are delighted to introduce Kat as the newest addition to the Phantom Canyon Brewing Company family,” said Phantom Canyon General Manager Mario Moser. “Her wealth of experience and dedication to crafting exceptional brews align seamlessly with our commitment to providing Colorado Springs with outstanding beer and hospitality. With Kat at the helm, we look forward to exploring new horizons in craft brewing and creating memorable experiences for our guests.”

As head brewer, Hess will oversee all aspects of brewing operations, including the creation of new recipes and leadership of the Phantom Canyon team.

Hess is already active in her new role. She follows in the footsteps of Charles McManus, the popular head brewer who left Phantom late last year to brew at Burns Family Artisan Ales in Denver. The handoff in leadership comes on the heels of Phantom Canyon’s 30th anniversary last year. You can read about its history in our article here.
