Local Bakers Tips for Inspired Pies

It’s the favorite dessert of the holidays. Local bakeries share their tips for making the perfect pie.

What would the holidays be without pie? But creating the decadent dessert from scratch can seem an intimidating, American Ninja Warrior-style culinary feat. We went to the pros at Boonzaaijer’s Dutch Bakery and 3.14 Sweet & Savory Pi Bar for some pie recipe tips to make it as easy as pie.

Tips to Perfect Your Pie Recipe

  1.  Focus on form. “It’s more about the method than the ingredients,” says Carma Barr, owner of 3.14. “You will find a million pie crust recipes out there, and most of them will work if you use the right method.”
  2. Use cold ingredients for the crust. “Do not knead or handle your pastry,” Barr says. “Wrap it, and let it rest for an hour in the refrigerator before rolling it out.”
  3. Roll out the dough on a professional plastic wrap for easy clean-up.
  4. Use a hot knife when slicing to achieve a picture-perfect wedge.
