Currently on view, Sofía Gallisa Muriente’s Lluvia con nieve (2014) uses archival footage from 1955 of a US plane landing in Puerto Rico carrying two tons of snow.

Contemporary Film, Video, and Sound: Maria Gaspar: "Clamour"

In summer of 2021, the Cook County Department of Corrections began the demolition of two jail dormitories. The buildings, perhaps best known for housing the likes of Al Capone, were more than a hundred years old. The artist Maria Gaspar, who grew up in Little Village, the same neighborhood where the jail is located, documented the demolition and site restoration over the course of two years. She positioned her camera across the street from the project, fixing its view on the long concrete wall that marks the border between the jail and the residential neighborhood. The result is Clamour, which is sixty hours and twenty minutes in duration and captures one section of the building block being torn down, from start to finish.

The extended run time of the video — which makes it effectively impossible to view in a single sitting — creates a tension between the persistence of carceral architecture and the possibility of resisting the logic it sustains. This tension is amplified by the scale of the institution itself. To this day, Cook County Jail remains the largest single-site jail in the United States, with an average daily population of approximately 9,000 people. The work’s collapsing of nine months of demolition, and a history that spans generations, offers a way to imagine the dismantling of structures that have shaped the lives of people both inside and outside the jail’s walls.

As part of the exhibition, the public is invited to a special performance on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 5 p.m. of We Lit a Fire and Trusted the Heat (After Angela Davis) by Gaspar and activated by musician Thaddeus Tukes. In the performance, Tukes plays a variety of percussive instruments, including Gaspar’s sonic sculpture made of iron bars salvaged from the same demolition featured in the film. Through the sounding of carceral debris, the artists activate the bars through generative touch and vibration, transforming materials of confinement into resonant sites of collective imagination and liberation.

Maria Gaspar’s Clamour is part of the Contemporary Film, Video, and Sound Series, which features a rotating selection of works focusing on alternative archives. The series is curated by Katja Rivera, Curator of Contemporary Art, and support is generously provided by The Margaret L. Lane Fund, the NEH Distinguished Teaching Professorship in the Humanities at Colorado College, and the CC Music Department.

Kyle Cervantes is a dynamic saxophonist and bandleader based in Denver, Colorado, whose soulful performances and innovative compositions captivate audiences. A graduate of the University of Northern Colorado's esteemed jazz program, he has collaborated with notable groups like The Denver Jazz Orchestra and The Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, and currently tours as the baritone saxophonist with the world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra. In August 2024, Kyle released his debut EP, "Odyssey," showcasing his unique blend of jazz influences and contemporary creativity.

Now in its tenth year, Tenacity: Women in Conservation is an extraordinary event celebrating the women shaping Colorado’s conservation landscape, where all are welcome. Springs Ensemble Theatre (SET) will open Frozen by Bryony Lavery, presenting a tightly focused, actor-driven exploration of understanding, acceptance, and the complicated terrain of forgiveness.

Directed by Henry Award nominee Matt Radcliffe, the production features three of Colorado Springs’ most respected performers: Henry Nominee Desiree Myers, Henry Winner Steve Emily, and Jane Fromme, who has performed in Colorado Springs for over three decades.

Lavery’s play follows three lives bound together by a violent crime: Nancy, a mother confronting unimaginable loss; Ralph, the man responsible; and Agnetha, a psychiatrist committed to understanding what drives violent behavior. Frozen asks an urgent question: what does it mean to seek understanding and forgiveness when the truth is unbearable?

Performed at the 59er Speakeasy in Old Colorado City, the one of a kind venue invites audiences into the story with an intimate, live performance.

London. A mysterious serial killer brutally murders young blonde women by stalking them in the night fog. One foggy, sinister night, a young man who claims his name is Jonathan Drew arrives at the guest house run by the Bunting family and rents a room.

Followed by a 15-minute talk about Alfred Hitchcock by Ralph Giordano.

The flame was lit from this quote, “Graffiti is a life force in a city, that says to every citizen, I’m alive, the city is alive. A city without graffiti is like a field without flowers.” Greg Niemeyer-UC Berkeley. When I started to noticed that I lived in a city that erases urban art/culture I knew it was time to step up and create a body of work that spoke to these truths. Bring back the culture in a gallery setting and Pop surrealistic imagery/themes that spoke to my childhood. A body of work that educates and invites the viewer into the world feeling alive. Challenging people to think outside the box in a box state. Hope you can make time to show love for the culture.
