As we get ready to celebrate our City’s 150th anniversary, it’s exciting to reflect on the wonderful gifts that our City’s founder, General William Jackson Palmer, bestowed on us. This includes more than 2,000 acres of incredible parkland – which, 148 years later, still includes some of the most sweeping, majestic views in the world.  Examples of parkland gifts from Palmer include: Alamo, Acacia, Antlers, Monument Valley and Palmer Park.

Another of Palmer's amazing legacies to our community is our tree-lined city.  When he founded our city in 1871, it was a nearly treeless, arid plain. Palmer changed that by planting thousands of trees in our city. To celebrate our 150th anniversary in 2021 and carry on Palmer’s vision of a tree-lined city, we are challenging the community to help plant 18,071 new trees over the next two years.

In partnership with Arts Month 2021, Planet Walk Colorado Springs is sponsoring a space-themed art contest for all students from the Colorado Springs region in grades K through 12. Electronic entries will be accepted for Visual Art beginning September 1st, 2021.  The original versions of each piece must be submitted by October 8, 2021.  Visit the Planet Walk Website for submittal details, at www.planetwalkcs.org.

$250 in total prizes will be awarded, including one $75 first place and one $25 second place certificate in each category. A special $50 award for Best-of-Show will also be awarded by the judges. All contest entries will be displayed online in a virtual art exhibition.

The event will also include a self-guided inner solar system tour at the Cool Science Festival located on the UCCS campus on September 9 from 10 AM – 4 PM. The tour starts at the Planet Walk table (which will represent the Sun) near the Student Union on campus and extend as far as Mars, on the western edge of campus.  If you like the idea of seeing Mars, but not the idea of zero oxygen, food or Starbucks, visit Mars with us, not with Elon Musk!

In honor of Halloween, everyone is invited to come out (costumed or not) and walk the inner planets, experiencing the temporary planet markers that represent our amazing solar system--starting with the marker for the Sun at our display table. Selected art entries will be displayed at UCCS, near our event table (and on the Planet Walk website throughout the coming year) for all to appreciate our community creativity inspired by Space!

The Modbo presents “Feathers and Fables,” an exhibition of photographs by Emma Powell. The opening reception is from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday, September 3, with live music by My Name is Harriett at 7:30 p.m.

As of this writing, masks are suggested for unvaccinated viewers. The show runs through Friday, September 24. In addition to the opening reception, the gallery is happily open by appointment.

"Feathers and Fables" is an exhibition of photographs that tell ambiguous stories, reminiscent of long-forgotten fairytales. Within these dreamlike scenes, animals are symbols, as well as characters. Emma Powell prints her artworks by hand using alternative and historic photographic processes in order to emphasize their illustrative nature and to explore the materiality of her photographs.

Emma Powell received her MFA in photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. Powell lives in Colorado Springs and has taught photography at Colorado College, as well as Iowa State University. She has also been an instructor, leading alternative process photography workshops at Penland School of Crafts, and other educational institutions. Powell’s artwork has been exhibited widely including at the Fox Talbot Museum, Lacock Abbey, England, Panopticon Gallery, Boston, and Colorado Photographic Arts Center, Denver.

About Lee Brice:

When current CMA and CMT Music Award-nominated and Curb Records recording artist, Lee Brice, isn't selling out arenas, writing and recording songs, or building new brands like American Born whiskey, you'll find the family man with his wife Sara, two young boys, and daughter. Meanwhile, with over 2.2 billion on-demand streams, and three billion spins on Pandora, Brice continues to enjoy massive success at country radio, digital streaming service and on the road. He is currently #1 at Country Radio with his fastest rising single career to date, “One of Them Girls,” which follows his #1 with Carly Pearce on “I Hope You’re Happy Now” and his #1 just prior to that, “Rumor,” which was nominated in the category Single of The Year at the 55th Annual ACM Awards. One of the most-played country artists of all time on Pandora, he is a member of the company's "Billionaires Club,” becoming only the second country artist behind Keith Urban to receive the Pandora Billionaire plaque. Lee is also a GRAMMY nominee, a CMA and ACM award winner, and he's taken eight radio singles to Number One: "A Woman Like You," "Hard to Love," "I Drive Your Truck," "I Don’t Dance," "Drinking Class," “Rumor," “I Hope You’re Happy Now, and “One Of Them Girls.” Garth Brooks, Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney and others have recorded his songs, and he's performed on numerous TV shows, including NBC's Today, ABC's The Bachelor, NBC's The Voice and FOX's Miss USA 2018. Lee performed as part of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song honoring Garth Brooks, aired on PBS March of 2020.

About Gabby Barrett:

Warner Music Nashville’s Gabby Barrett is setting the trend. Recently crowned the ACM New Female Artist of the Year, Barrett scored previous CMA, CMT and American Music Awards nods, was named Billboard’s Top New Country Artist of 2020, an Amazon Music Breakthrough artist, included in Variety’s 2020 Young Hollywood Impact Report, and one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in Music, proving why she’s “the face of Gen-Z Country” (HITS). Her meteoric 5X PLATINUM debut “I Hope” was the most-streamed Country song of 2020, highlighted as one of the Best Songs of the year by the Associated Press and Billboard, and winning CMT’s 2020 Breakthrough Video of the Year award, simultaneously cracking the Top 3 on Billboard's all genre Hot 100 chart. Reigning atop the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for a record-breaking 27 weeks, “I Hope” was also the first debut single by a solo female artist to top the Country radio charts since 2017 and made her the youngest artist with a #1 debut at Country radio in over two decades. Adding to over 1 BILLION+ global streams, her top-streaming LP GOLDMINE includes the 4-week Hot AC #1 crossover version of “I Hope” feat. Charlie Puth – which earned the iHeartRadio Titanium Award for reaching over 1 BILLION radio spins and was named one of Rolling Stone's best Pop and Country collaborations of 2020 - alongside her PLATINUM three-week #1 single, “The Good Ones.”

About Jimmie Allen:

Named ACM's 2021 New Male Artist of the Year, and signed to BBR Music Group’s Stoney Creek Records, Jimmie Allen has already made history as the first black artist to launch a career with two consecutive No. 1 hits on country radio – the first being his debut single “Best Shot” – which claimed the No. 1 spot for three weeks – and second being his latest single “Make Me Want To” off his debut album Mercury Lane, released fall 2018. Named in tribute to the street he grew up on and the origin of his incredible journey, Mercury Lane features a cutting-edge mix of country, rock, R&B, and pop that draws upon the influence of his family and small-town upbringing of the critically-acclaimed rising star. Rolling Stone raved Allen’s debut “challenges the narrowly defined model of what constitutes a next big thing in country music in 2018” and The New York Times dubbed it one of 2018’s strongest, calling it “a conventional country album, filled with songs about the small details.” Jimmie’s most recent single “This Is Us” features Noah Cyrus and marks Allen’s fastest consuming single, with 30 million streams to date. His latest project Bettie James, released in July 2020, is a star-studded collaboration EP featuring Brad Paisley, Charley Pride, Darius Rucker, Mickey Guyton, Nelly, Cyrus, The Oak Ridge Boys, Rita Wilson, Tauren Wells & Tim McGraw. Wanting to weave his late father and late grandmother’s legacies into his music, Jimmie named the project after them, with each featured artist on the project having touched their respective lives through their own music. The result is a musical composition of love, heartbreak, perseverance, hope, and faith.

Brought to you by Josh The Curator and Chef Brother Luck.

September 17 at 6 p.m. at Brother’s new private space “The Studio,” Chef Luck will be creating a 7 course meal inspired by the works of local artist, Luke Shefer. Luke will be presenting 7 pieces of original art and Brother will create a dish inspired by each painting. Wine will be paired with the dinner and inspired by the art as well by local wine superstar Steve “Saus” Kander.

The body of work being presented is called 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly'. There will be classic gold leafed iconography of the saints, as well as portraits of darker pop icons like Hannibal Lecter. The “Ugly” painting will be a surprise...but we can say it could be viewed as “The Bad” or “The Good” depending on your perspective.

Luke will be discussing each painting, as well as talking to the guests about his history, life, self, and his art. Brother Luck will be chatting about his dishes and inspirations and Steve will charm everyone with his infinite wellspring of wine knowledge and his stellar pairings!

There are only 20 seats so book right now!

Artist is available for commissions as well.

Winston Churchill has just been awarded honorary US citizenship by President John F. Kennedy. In recognition of this unprecedented occasion, The American-Oxford Society has asked the former Prime Minister to address them and discuss what this honor means to him. In this often funny, sometimes touching and always engaging one-man- show, veteran British actor, David Payne, brings Churchill to life onstage.

Audiences will be delighted to hear of his exploits during the Boer War, his constant battles with Britain’s fellow politicians, his special relationship with America and America’s presidents. But most telling of all, Churchill enlightens the audience with intimate and touching details of the two special women in his life—his wife Clementine and Queen Elizabeth. With elements of The Crown and The Darkest Hour, David Payne once again gives audiences an opportunity to spend an evening with one of the greatest historical figures in the world—Sir Winston Churchill.

Look out now, here they come! The Red Mountain Boys are a hot new bluegrass supergroup lighting up the Pikes Peak region.

A longtime staple of the scene, Alan Begley (Willie Bean Bluegrass) fronts the Boys with his Martin flat-top guitar.  Lewis Mock (Kansas State Hall-of-Fame musician, Radford & Lewis Band)  brings the fire with his five-string banjo.  Jon Murphy (Grandpa’s Cough Medicine, The Grass is Dead) keeps the Boys rock solid with his metronome-like bass playing. Jeff Daugherty (2014 John Hartford Songwriting Award winner) plays his mandolin like a man possessed.

Take their instrumental prowess, add in four-part vocal harmonies and world-class songwriting and look out – it’s a recipe for powerful, hard-driving bluegrass music.

Theatreworks opens their season with 'Witch' written by Jen Silverman and directed by Caitlin Lowans.

A woman - who may be a witch - thinks fast when a man - who’s definitely the devil - comes knocking in this dark comedy based on a Jacobean classic.

Mischief is afoot in the sleepy village of Edmonton and the fate of the world is at stake in this smart modern fable. When the emotionally conflicted son of the local lord and an ambitious newcomer come into conflict, help presents itself to both of them in the same guise—as the Devil himself. But while these two young men take advantage of the Devil’s bargain to accomplish their own questionable ends, someone else in town stands her ground—Elizabeth, an outcast whom everyone believes to be a witch.

Witch content advisory: This production includes strong language, a moment of violence, insults about potlucks, and posits the existence of the Devil. We are always happy to talk with you if you have specific questions. Please email clowans@uccs.edu.
