The Halcyon Cherry Creek: A Shopping and Poolside Lounging Getaway

Here’s how to spend an overnight or weekend in the heart of upscale Cherry Creek. You may not want to leave the dreamy rooftop pool, but there’s so much to do all around you.

Cherry Creek has long been the epicenter of shopping in Denver, and the vibrant, affluent neighborhood is a prime spot for a getaway to live the good life at one of Denver’s best hotels. The Halcyon Cherry Creek makes a perfect base for your retreat.

The 154-room Halcyon is hip with a Colorado casualness and comfortably upscale vibe. It’s modern, luxury space is filled with personalized service and unique amenities. The front desk doubles as an espresso and wine bar; order up a complimentary beverage upon check-in. The Gear Garage is stocked with complimentary adventure supplies, ranging from yard games and pickleball paddles to New Belgium cruiser bikes and Piaggo scooters. Our favorite was the Kota longboard, an SUP style skateboard with a street paddle.

Each guest room has a turntable and collection of vinyl records to enjoy, plus a collection of assorted books if you’re feeling literary. Those features help to give rooms the feel of staying at a friend’s house — or their luxury condo. Rooms come in 10 different layouts. Many feature Juliet or full balconies that enhance that luxury condo feel — as do the wood floors, dark accents, and leather and metal finishes.

Don’t Miss: Rare Bird and the Rooftop Pool

We did not want to leave the Halcyon’s rooftop. The top-floor terrace is home to one of the only heated rooftop hotel pools open year-round. There’s a large hot tub too and canvas-covered private cabanas available. The views are spectacular, especially at sunset, allowing you take in the downtown Denver skyline and full Front Range, even Pikes Peak. It’s worth noting that you can purchase a day pass or reserve a private cabana if you prefer a daycation instead of a full overnight stay.

Rare Bird is the rooftop bar with a fun, airy scene (and it is open to the public as well as hotel guest). True to its perch, Rare Bird’s menu is perfect for poolside sipping, and you can order poolside. Or grab a seat beside a fire pit or in a hanging birdcage chair and order a craft cocktail from the avian-themed specialties. Try a spicy Fire Bird, featuring 21 Seeds Cucumber Jalapeño Tequila, or a Honey Bee, built with Four Roses Bourbon.

Rare Bird’s food menu features sharable plates and some basic entrees, such as a burger and Caesar salad. Weekend cookouts feature baby back ribs and smoked chicken. The Rare Bird makes an excellent airborne hangout anytime, but watch for special events — like the summer launch luau — that add an extra festive note to the scene.

Where to Eat at the Halcyon Cherry Creek

You won’t go wrong at Local Jones, located on the Halcyon’s ground floor. The contemporary American bistro serves all day, breakfast through dinner. Its stylish, comfortable decor blends seamlessly with the Halcyon, making it feel like you’re eating in the living room. The menu features elevated comfort food, from shareables such as ham and cheese croquettes, to entrees that include chile Colorado pot roast and daily specials like fried chicken.

Within the roughly 14 square blocks of Cherry Creek North (home to the Halcyon Cherry Creek), there are more than 50 restaurants and bars, and you will find quality as much as quantity. Fruition boasts both Michelin Guide and James Beard Award honors, Matsuhisa is a standout for sushi and Japanese cuisine, and Ay Papi is a more casual, vibrant Cuban-inspired restaurant and bar..

Also within two miles of the Halcyon, there are several restaurants that were James Beard Award semifinalists in 2024: Sắp Sửa (Best New Restaurant), Molotov Kitschen + Cocktails (Best Chef: Bo Porytko) and Le French (Best Chef: Aminata Dia and Rougui Dia). The modern Chinese-American Q House is Michelin Recommended as well.

What to Do at the Halcyon Cherry Creek

Shoppers, you’re in heaven. Cherry Creek North boasts Denver’s highest concentration of locally owned stores. The walkable, mixed-use district is filled with fashion boutiques, home furnishing stores, galleries, spas and more. And the nearby Cherry Creek Shopping Center is home to another 160-some stores, including the likes of Neiman Marcus, Tiffany & Co. and Louis Vuitton.

Outside of retail therapy, the Denver Botanic Garden, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and the Denver Zoo are all nearby for a variety of cultural experiences. And you can follow the wide Cherry Creek Regional Trail alongside its namesake waterway 4 miles to Confluence Park — or about 40 miles the other direction all the way to Castlewood Canyon State Park. It’s a great path for using a bike or scooter from the Halcyon’s Gear Garage.
